My Math Teacher Said Everything Involves Math. What if We Factored In Grace?

Seemingly eons ago in those high school years when the math classes got a little tougher and more mental effort and discipline were required to solve the equations, I began to question the need for all this repetitive regimen. How would I actually use this stuff in my adult life? My math teacher told me, "Everything is connected to math." I figured he was just responding with necessary "teacher-speak." But as I gained more life experience, I found his words to be true. Can any of you relate? Solving life's equations requires the same repetitive regimen, which inspired this column. In our efforts to finding solutions to life's challenges, what if we used the same components, the same math concepts? What if we factored in grace to every life experience?

Doing so creates a masterful, concentrated simplicity so powerful, yet understated, that it becomes transformative in both personal growth and in community development. This transformative movement will extend into the future, with possibilities only the most optimistic would envision, but are attainable realities within our collective grasp.

Writing in a format such as this one, the lure or the trepidation of artificial intelligence, depending on your viewpoint, is always factored into the message from this humble scribe. You won't find any AI created content in my words. But I am aware of the backdrop of artificial intelligence in the social media dominated world in which we all reside. I too have read of the calamity of rogue AI agents wreaking havoc on society.

What if we factor in grace, that non-religious, absolutely secular force into the world-wide media outlet as well? The effort is the same, the methodology identical. AI is after all a human concoction, so it is within human control at some point.

I'll attempt to present the case for factoring grace into every human interaction in the paragraphs that follow this one. The cost to implement is zero, but the return is infinite, both personally and worldly.

What If We Factored In Grace To Every Decision?

Life is an ongoing series of events that challenge, invite, discourage, and elate. Not everything is within our personal control, but there is a dynamic force at our disposal and it's found in the simplicity of grace. Indeed, it is a force so powerful, so transformative that if harnessed and applied, is truly life-changing. Grace is that dynamic force.

What if we factored in grace when facing those aforementioned challenges? True grace is the antithesis of much of our culture today. Grace is calm, subtle, and generous. Grace is the gentle presence that listens before speaking, that offers a hand up with no expectation of a return favor.

Grace is the eyes-wide-open acknowledgment of difficult times, not ignoring those hard times, but also not giving the difficult situations extra oxygen to control us.

Grace isn't found in grandiose gestures. No, this powerful human tool for good is really a series of small gestures, seemingly insignificant acts of kindness that tend to build upon each other, creating a model for citizenship and compassion.

What if we factored in grace by how we judge ourselves? Grace will allow us to forgive ourselves when we fail, and as humans, we will certainly fail. Gloriously, that is merely a launching pad to greater grace. Grace is that powerful, even in it's soothing simplicity.

You see, when we factor in grace within how we look at ourselves, and how we refocus ourselves, what follows is mathematical in the secular equation. We forward that simplicity on to those we encounter on this journey of life.

Grace is calm among chaos, tender during turmoil, and always ready to offer an assist, an encouraging word, and a firm commitment to lead by example. Grace under pressure becomes a shield of valor that allows us to ignore the harsh character attacks that will come from a world of stress, fear, and a selfish desire to take without giving back, to strike down without offering solutions, and to demean rather than consider any opposing viewpoints.

Steps Leading To That Concentrated Simplicity

What if we factored grace into some simple steps? There were some words written earlier in this composition about the chatter involving AI agents going rogue and taking over the world. I would not pretend to to be deeply versed in the algorithms of artificial intelligence and the systems supported by AI.

But I know this to be true. Artificial intelligence was designed by humans, built by humans, and at some level maintained by humans. What if we factor in grace to those three quadrants? Done properly, following the pathway of grace, AI agents the extension of which spring from human designers will become extensions of grace. The math is simple and as my former teacher told me, "Everything is connected to math." Let's do the math.

Grace begins by allowing ourselves the humanity of errors. We recognize our own failures, fix them, and get better. The same grace is extended to those we meet as we grant the same forgiveness. We meet them with compassion rather than demeaning venom. We don't lower acceptable standards of adult conduct, but we do lead by example. Grace becomes our go-to characteristic in tumultuous times as we exemplify calm composure, rather than radical rants.

Small gestures are the bedrock of grace. Being patient with the person in front of us who is struggling to walk, providing a listening ear to the person we meet who just needs a little human interaction. Stepping in to the leading edge in support of people in need, standing up to injustice, with the same calm composure, are hallmarks of grace.

The math really is simple. If we add grace as a factor in the daily equations of responsible adulthood, we'll get better answers. Better information in yields better results out. As I imagine was involved with building artificial intelligence.
