What Does Integrity Mean? The Answer Fits Accountable Citizens and Buildings.

Today we're dabbling into the world of philosophical, of reflective thinking, and of metaphorical reasoning. We're taking a sort of big picture dive into answering the question, "What does integrity mean?" It would seem to be a logical fit among the pages of a website devoted to personal accountability and acceptance of responsibility.

The metaphor we'll use is that of a big building. We'll include strength because being personally accountable certainly requires being strong when the going gets tough. We'll also incorporate system functionality because acceptance of responsibility requires working within established systems and expectations. Just below is an accepted definition of integrity as it relates to a physical structure.

"Structural integrity is the ability of a structure to maintain its intended shape and strength under load, ensuring safety against collapse or failure over its lifespan. While structural strength refers to the capacity to withstand loads, integrity is the overall assurance that components, connections, and materials work together as a system."

What Does Integrity Mean In The Realm Accountable Citizens?

"The ability of a structure to maintain its intended shape and strength under load, ensuring safety against collapse or failure." Structural integrity allows us to trust that the building will remain standing, even in the face of buffeting winds and stress, both internal and external.

What does integrity mean from a personal standpoint? It means that same trust is present. A person of integrity is trustworthy. There will be no doubt that he will remain true to his core values and won't waffle or wilt when stress both internal and external tests his resolve. We know by observing his life that he won't buckle under any load. We can trust him to be there in good times and challenging periods.

"Integrity is the overall assurance that components, connections, and materials work together as a system." People who are grounded in accountability and integrity are always looking for ways to lift up those around them. We know by observing her life that she won't take shortcuts to line her pockets at the expense of other people. She will be a person of honor who will work within established systems and laws to improve her work environment, her family, and her community.

Buildings designed to last for generations use quality materials. They are engineered to serve a particular mission, a specific purpose. They came about as a result of careful planning, learning from past efforts, and improving on new construction projects.

Persons of integrity learn from the examples of other people. They model the honesty, dependability, and ethical standards of people who came before them. They also pay attention to the signs of deterioration in personal character, in the same way a building inspector looks for foundational cracks.

What does integrity mean? It means we look within ourselves to be sure we aren't straying off track. We check ourselves and our motivations to ensure our motives and subsequent actions are of the highest moral and ethical standards.

Personal Integrity As A Safe Haven

Structural integrity in buildings offer us the assurance, the trust to enter them without fear, with no trepidation of possible harm, and to enjoy the opportunities built above the foundation and within the walls.

Personal integrity offers the same concept while adding in the human attributes of kindness, grace, patience, and our two benchmark characteristics, personal responsibility and accountability as citizens of America. We are there to offer a kind word, and a welcoming hand of assistance.

Personal integrity demonstrates reliability over time, admitting our mistakes, apologizing and getting better, doing better.

Personal integrity buttresses us against the lure of opportunism to cheat, to disparage the character of those who we see as rivals, to descend into the trap of attacks and apathy. There are certainties in every life. We will face adversity, there is no escaping it. Most of the time it is easier to abandon honesty when we face difficult choices. Genuine integrity causes us to stop and think. It leads us to the next paragraph.

Moral integrity means we live our lives in an ethical fashion regardless of whether or not anyone is watching us. It isn't about being right, but rather about doing right.

Whether speaking about personal relationships, business or work environments, community involvement or even in our metaphor today, structural integrity, the characteristics are similar. Trustworthy and reliable. Built to last, engineered to withstand the inevitable stress tests, dependable and accessible.

What does integrity mean? It means every day, every time, we stand firm in our core values, we remain truthful, we act in upright, ethical ways every time. We are honest, compassionate, strong when needed to be so, always willing and ready to lend a hand.
